How are nutrients different to drugs or herbs?

Because nutritional supllements often appear as pills or capsules some people mistakenly think they are medication. Here is an important difference between drug pills and nutritional supplements. Drugs have a pharmacological effect on the body. That is to say their function is to increase, decrease or block entirely one or more biochemical/physiological functions in the body. The body does not recognize any drug as part of what it expects to find in the digestive or blood circulation system. Drugs are therefore seen as alien intruders. The reason that drugs always have negative side effects is firstly from an undesirable but invariable secondary consequence of interference in the body's biochemical functions. The second reason is the body's own response (sometimes disasterous) to what it sees as an alien intruder.

Herbs are low level drugs that do have pharmacological effects and therefore can also produce some side-effects though generally not as badly as can do prescription drugs. They also are variable in their effect since they are a natural product which can vary significantly from batch to batch.

In contrast to both drugs and herbs, nutrients are sensed by the body as food. Food does not directly interfere with any physiological function. What nutrients do is fortify the body to enable it to function generally at 100% of its capability. This is an important distinction. Because the body expects and welcomes nutrients, there are very rarely any unwanted side effects.

There are two main roles for nutrients. The first is simply to ensure that the body receives all the nutrients it needs (the daily allowance) in order to function. In other words to avoid any deficiency since such deficiency will have undesirable consequences. The second function requires us to recommend far more than the normal daily requirement of one or more nutrients in order to combat an existing condition. An example of this is our B complex where one capsule a day is sufficient to provide the normal individual with their daily requirement of B complex. But where their Homocysteine level is elevated and therefore poses a serious danger of heart and arterial disease developing, a dosage of up to 6 capsules a day (far more than a normal daily requirement) is indicated.
